Our Ozone Layer is Recovering

Ozone hole.Contrary to what most might believe, our ozone layer is actually in the process of healing itself. Here's a recent announcement from NASA:

A team led by Eun-Su Yang of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, analyzed 25 years of independent ozone observations at different altitudes in Earth's stratosphere, which lies between six and 31 miles above the surface. The observations were gathered from balloons, ground-based instruments, NASA and NOAA satellites.

The stratosphere is Earth's second lowest atmospheric layer. It contains approximately 90 percent of all atmospheric ozone. The researchers concluded the Earth's protective ozone layer outside of the polar regions stopped thinning around 1997. Ozone in these areas declined steadily from 1979 to 1997.

"These results confirm the Montreal Protocol and its amendments have succeeded in stopping the loss of ozone in the stratosphere," Yang said. "At the current recovery rate, the atmospheric modeling community's best estimates predict the global ozone layer could be restored to 1980 levels — the time that scientists first noticed the harmful effects human activities were having on atmospheric ozone — some time in the middle of this century."

Google to allow free downloads of books

An old book.Through a project known as Gutenberg, volunteers have been scanning public domain books and converting them to text files for many years. This is done so that the files can be used for printing, reading or piping into a programme for editing.

Now, Google has acquired this information and is offering users the flexibility of downloading and printing selected books from Google Book Search which is still under beta. If you are interested in exploring and discovering older works, check it out.

Femtroopers

Femtroopers, the latest trend of Star Wars fandom. What do you think is the latest trend of Star Wars fandom? It is called Femtroopers, basically a female version of the Stormtroopers. While the armored hot pants and bare midriff are both nice touches, the contoured breast plate is definitely the sexiest/funniest part of the costume. You can find more of such pictures by searching for “Femtroopers” on Google.

Using X-ray plates in place of records

X-Ray plates as replacement for records.During the late 1930s and early 1940s, the most prominent sound recording equipment was the wax disk cutter. Since there was a war going on during that time, there was a lack of materials for creating records. As a result, experimentation with new materials begun and by the 1950s discarded X-ray films were used in place of records.
Owing to the lack of recordings of Western music available in the USSR, people had to rely on records coming through Eastern Europe, where controls on records were less strict, or on the tiny influx of records from beyond the iron curtain. Such restrictions meant the number of recordings would remain small and precious. But enterprising young people with technical skills learned to duplicate records with a converted phonograph that would "press" a record using a very unusual material for the purpose; discarded x-ray plates.

This material was both plentiful and cheap, and millions of duplications of Western and Soviet groups were made and distributed by an underground roentgenizdat, or x-ray press, which is akin to the samizdat that was the notorious tradition of self-publication among banned writers in the USSR. According to rock historian Troitsky, the one-sided x-ray disks costed about one to one and a half rubles each on the black market, and lasted only a few months, as opposed to around five rubles for a two-sided vinyl disk.

By the late 50's, the officials knew about the roentgenizdat, and made it illegal in 1958. Officials took action to break up the largest ring in 1959, sending the leaders to prison, beginning an orginization by the Komsomol of "music patrols" that later undertook to curtail illegal music activity all over the country.

The Envelope Collective - Postal art

An example from The Envelope Collective. The Envelope Collective collects decorated envelopes from all over the world and makes use of its website as an online gallery for the received pieces. So, the next time you opened your mail, don’t throw the envelope away. Rather, create some art on it and post it to them for the whole wide world to see.

As an interesting note, The Envelope Collective has this to say regarding the remark, “You totally stole this idea from PostSecret”:

While we appreciate the comparisons to PostSecret, we actually didn't take Mr. Warren's equally fantastic idea. The only thing we have in common with it is that we receive mail and put it online. Oh, and Garrett and Frank Warren are from the same area in Maryland. But other than that, no similarities. So, to sum it up: PostSecret = much more popular than Envelope Collective, but different.

Planet Earth May Have 'Tilted' To Keep Its Balance

Picture that depicts where the continents would be when Earth attempts to balance itself. Can you imagine a shift in the Earth so profound that Alaska would sit at the equator rather than where it is located now? If such a shift occurs, where would you be? At the Earth poles perhaps!

The theory, known as true polar wander, postulates that if an object of sufficient weight -- such as a supersized volcano -- ever formed far from the equator, the force of the planet's rotation would gradually pull the heavy object away from the axis the Earth spins around. If the volcanoes, land and other masses that exist within the spinning Earth ever became sufficiently imbalanced, the planet would tilt and rotate itself until this extra weight was relocated to a point along the equator.

By analyzing the magnetic composition of ancient sediments found in the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, Princeton University's Adam Maloof has lent credence to a 140-year-old theory regarding the way the Earth might restore its own balance if an unequal distribution of weight ever developed in its interior or on its surface.

Underwater Hotel and Restaurant

World's first undersea hotel to be located off the coast of a private island in Fiji.Taking a vacation under the sea sounds like science fiction, doesn’t it? Not according to Poseidon Resorts which is designing a hotel on the ocean floor. More than 60% of the exterior will be constructed using transparent acrylic “windows”. What a spectacular view of the undersea world these windows will provide.

The facilities housed by this luxury complex will include a revolving restaurant, pool, bar, cafe, tennis courts, dive shop/water sports center, library, and luxury spa/hydrotherapy. This hotel is currently under construction off the coast of a private island in Fiji with plans to open next year. Of course, staying at the world’s first undersea hotel will not come cheap. Reservation will start from mid-November, 2006 at a rate of $15,000 per person, per week.

If you can’t wait to live in a fishbowl, how about trying out the world’s first undersea restaurant, Ithaa, located at Rangali Island, Maldives (opened on 15 April 2006). It seats at 5 metres below the waves of the Indian Ocean at the Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa with a transparent arch that spans the entire room. This offers a 360° view of the surrounding reef and marine life while dinning. This will certainly makes for a romantic and unforgettable dining experience. For those who are rich enough to afford it that is.

Fire ant raft

Floating fire ant colony. This fire ant colony is approximately one foot across. At this size, there should be millions of ants. Kyle Pias who took this picture wrote:

This raft was seen floating in a flooded portion of the Kissimmee Prarie. Im prettty sure the genus is Solenopsis, but Im not sure which species, and I doubt that its identifiable from this picture. It was taken from about 5 feet above the subject from a swamp buggy, and there was about 3 feet of water on the ground, so there was no getting a closer shot.

Can you imagine what would happen if something walked into one of these rafts? I cant even think about what to do if that happened, I doubt even dunking underwater would accomplish anything...

Eesh, scary little buggers.

Play Station 3 tackles world ills

A Sony play station 3 on display.Sony is collaborating with US biologist by introducing PS3 into the field of distributed computing. This project will examine how the shape of proteins, critical to most biological functions, affects disease. The performance of a network of PS3’s will be on par with that of a supercomputer.
Distributed computing is a way of solving large complex problems by dividing them between many computers.

With 10,000 machines joined together the researchers calculate they should be able to do a thousand trillion calculations per second.

If that was achieved it would be nearly four times as fast as the world's most powerful supercomputer, IBM's BlueGene/L System, capable of 280.6 trillion calculations per second.

More on Steorn energy technology

Steorn CEOPreviously, I mentioned that Steorn has come up with a new technology to produce limitless amounts of clean, free energy. More information about the technology are as follows:
There is a test rig with wheels and cogs and four magnets meticulously aligned so as to create the maximum tension between their fields and one other magnet fixed to a point opposite. A motor rotates the wheel bearing the magnets and a computer takes 28,000 measurements a second. The magnets, naturally, act upon one another. And when it is all over, the computer tells us that almost three times the amount of energy has come out of the system as went in. In fact, this piece of equipment is 285% efficient.

Tongue made from buttocks

"We removed the tumour-filled tongue, checking that there were no remaining cancerous cells around the patient's mouth, then collected skin, fat and nerve tissue from the man's buttocks and modelled that into a new tongue, which we sewed into his mouth."

Making a new tongue out of tissue from the buttocks! That’s odd.

We make 'snap judgements' of others

Face.New research indicates that the first one-tenth of a second is all that is required for our brain to make a decision as to whether we like the person or not.

According to US psychologist, Alex Todorov, people respond intuitively to faces so rapidly, that their reasoning minds may not have time to influence the reaction.

"The link between facial features and character may be tenuous at best, but that doesn't stop our minds from sizing other people up at a glance. We decide very quickly whether a person possesses many of the traits we feel are important, such as likeability and competence, even though we have not exchanged a single word with them", Mr Todorov explained.

"We still don't know the physical features of a face that lead to a particular trait inference. We know generally what makes a face attractive, such as its symmetry, the proportions of its parts and the like. But what is it about a face that makes you think its owner is an essentially competent person? That's the subject of another study, one that needs to be done", Mr Todorov added.

So I guess people who underwent plastic surgery will make a big difference in influencing the likeability factor after all.

Apple to recall 1.8 million notebook batteries

Damaged Apple laptopApple is following Dell footsteps in recalling 1.8 million laptops affected by the recent Sony battery problem. This decision was made after a total of nine complaints of “overheating” were lodged by users. Apple's is the second-largest consumer electronics recall in history, behind only Dell's.

The affected laptop models are sold from October 2003 to August 2006 and include the 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook g4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4. The newly released MacBooks and MacBook Pros are unaffected by this recall. If you are an owner of the affected Apple laptop, check out the following site to determine if you require a battery exchange.

Sony has just released a statement regarding Sony’s support of Apple’s recall of lithium ion battery packs used in Apple notebook computers. In it, Sony explains the cause of its battery problem as follows:

On rare occasions, microscopic metal particles in the recalled battery cells may come into contact with other parts of the battery cell, leading to a short circuit within the cell. Typically, a battery pack will simply power off when a cell short circuit occurs. However, under certain rare conditions, an internal short circuit may lead to cell overheating and potentially flames. The potential for this to occur can be affected by variations in the system configurations found in different notebook computers.

However, it was on fire for a second time, a couple of minutes later. Nevertheless, the owner managed to extinguish the fire on the driveway shortly before the arrival of the firemen. The only damage to the house was a smudge on the wall and fire extinguisher dust on the furniture. Nobody was hurt in this incident.

Pluto - Planet No more

PlutoThe debate is now over. Leading astronomers have declared that Pluto is no longer a planet. Hence the current solar system that we are familiar with has downsized from nine to eight planets.

For now, membership will be restricted to the eight "classical" planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Much-maligned Pluto doesn't make the grade under the new rules for a planet: "a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."

Pluto is automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit overlaps with Neptune's.

Instead, it will be reclassified in a new category of "dwarf planets," similar to what long have been termed "minor planets." The definition also lays out a third class of lesser objects that orbit the sun — "small solar system bodies," a term that will apply to numerous asteroids, comets and other natural satellites.

Frog juice Bug Repellent?

A frog in Bloomfield River rainforest area, Queensland, Australia.Australian researchers have discovered that one of the most effective natural mosquito repellents comes from an unlikely source: smelly frog skin.

According to Craig Williams, an ecologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia who led the research team:

"Because frogs have delicate skins designed for absorbing water from their environment, they are vulnerable to things like infections, predators, and [parasites that live in skin]," he said.

But human tests for a frog skin-based repellent haven't been carried out, and Williams and his team already foresee—or foresmell—some obstacles to making a commercial product.

"We tried putting some of the chemicals from frog skin in a lotion," he said, "but the odor was too strong."

Some of the frogs' secretions smell of rotting meat, the team reports. Others give off aromas of nuts or thyme leaves. The researchers say the strong smell is what repels biting insects.

Tea – A healthier Choice?

A cup of teaMost of us drink more water than tea. However, recent studies by UK nutritionists have shown that drinking tea has more benefits than drinking water. For instance, they have discovered that drinking three to four cups of tea a day can cut the chances of having a heart attack. Other health benefits seen included protection against tooth plaque and potentially tooth decay, plus bone strengthening.

Dr Ruxton said: "Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so its got two things going for it."

Hmmm… maybe it’s time that I cut down my coffee intake and have more tea instead?

Missing Austrian girl found – after 8 years

A bench in the garden.Police have rescued a woman found staggering in a garden nearby a house in Strasshof, in the Gaenserndorf area on Vienna's northeastern outskirts. Based on the passport found at the house where she was allegedly imprisoned and that she had the same distinctive scar as the Austrian girl, it is highly possible that she is Natascha Kampusch – an Austrian girl who went missing at the age of ten and sparked a huge manhunt.

Her suspected kidnapper, Wolfgang Priklopil, died after throwing himself in front of a train. He had been chased by police earlier on Wednesday evening and his red BMW car was later found abandoned. Apparently, this poor girl has been kept in a garage that had a cavity measuring four by three metres (yards), with an entrance measuring 50cm by 50cm. The police believe it was blocked with a sound-proof safe whenever the kidnapper left the scene. A bed and bookshelf with children's books were reportedly also found there. It is still not clear what the kidnapper‘s motives were as police said that he had no connection to the girl’s family and there had been no ransom demand.

Psychologists believe that the woman suffered from "Stockholm Syndrome" – a psychological condition in which captives begin to sympathise with their kidnappers. Austrian police are waiting for her DNA test results due later on Thursday which will confirm the woman's identity.

She is indeed lucky to be well and alive after been abducted for so many years. Many abducted girls throughout the world were either raped and killed, or even forced into prostitution, and can only pray that someone can save them from their kidnappers.

The future of paper

Image showing some uses of nanowire paperThe researchers at the University of Arkansas have claimed a breakthrough in nanotechnology by being able to create paper made from long titanium oxide nanowires. According to FM89 Newsroom,

The material can be bent, trimmed, and folded like paper made from natural fibers, but it's chemically inert and can withstand temperatures up to 700 Celsius (almost 1300 degrees Fahrenheit).

Tien says the material could have many applications, including filters against airborne bacterial spores, protective armor, and media for controlled drug release. But another application could be the future of printed paper. "We can, using ink, write things on [the nanowire paper], and when we shine a UV light on that, we can erase it. We can write, erase, re-write, re-erase," says Tien.

Wow, imagine the amount of paper this technology can save. Life will never be the same again when nanowire paper becomes commonplace in the future.

Could the house fire be caused by Dell laptop?

House severely damaged by fireLouis Minner was awoken by the smell of an electrical fire but after a quick survey of his house, nothing was found and he went back to bed. Forty-five minutes later, he was awoken again and shocked to discover that his couch was on fire.

His house was severely damaged by the fire which took fire-fighters 10 minutes to extinguish. In addition to an uninhabitable house, the family had lost all of its possessions. However, nobody was hurt in the fire.

Recent reports of Dell laptop bursting into flames led Louis Minner to believe that his wife’s Dell laptop which was sitting on the couch at the time of the incident must have started the fire.

It is still unknown as to whether the fire was sparked by a Dell laptop. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation and it is still too early to jump into conclusion. Nevertheless, it is better to be safe than sorry. If you are still holding on to an affected laptop, you should exchange your battery as soon as possible.

A self-playing violin

Self-playing Virtuoso ViolinWe have all heard of a self-playing piano. How about a self-playing violin? As the words imply, these violins are able to play itself with a bow, no person necessary.

Now, this is a great chance for those who lacked the requisite musical talents to impress their guests. For this, you will need to have a deep pocket as it costs $17,500 to own one. If you do intend to get one, do remember to turn it off when you are out. Imagine the scare it would bring to someone who has no knowledge of it. Do check out the following demonstration video.

An unusual game of strip poker

Four of a kindA champion has just emerged from an unusual game of Strip Poker involving both man and woman in a town just west of London, UK. John Young, a 32-year-old freelance writer beat 200 other contestants from 12 countries to win the 10,000 pounds prize. Upon winning the competition, he removed his remaining clothes in the name of charity (Cancer Research) for another 10,000 pounds. Stripping for charity!

In addition to the rules governing poker play, strict guidelines on the stripping element were adhered to. This includes starting the match by wearing only 5 articles of clothing as supplied by the organizers. Upon stripping down completely, each contestant was given a towel to cover themselves up.

Mysterious Dark Matter Revealed

Image which proves the existence of dark matterDark matter cannot be directly detected via optical means. As such, many aspects of it are a matter for pure conjecture. Now, astrophysicists have made a breakthrough in proving the existence of dark matter.

What exactly is dark matter? The explanation from Space.com is as follows.

The normal matter in the cosmos —atoms that make up stars, planets, air and life—accounts for only a small fraction of what must exist, based on the fact that without an additional source of gravity, galaxies would fly apart and galaxy clusters could not hold together as they do. Nobody knows where all that gravity comes from, so scientists say there must be some invisible stuff out there, which they call dark matter. Its presence is indirectly supported by many observations. Given what's known, this is the makeup of the universe:
  • 5 percent normal matter
  • 25 percent dark matter
  • 70 percent dark energy
Dark energy is an even more mysterious phenomenon, a force of some sort that beats out gravity and is causing the universe to expand at an ever-faster pace.

According to Chandra X-Ray observatory, the evidence for the existence of dark matter is as follows.

Hot gas detected by Chandra in X-rays is seen as two pink clumps in the image and contains most of the "normal," or baryonic, matter in the two clusters. The bullet-shaped clump on the right is the hot gas from one cluster, which passed through the hot gas from the other larger cluster during the collision. An optical image from Magellan and the Hubble Space Telescope shows the galaxies in orange and white. The blue areas in this image show where astronomers find most of the mass in the clusters. The concentration of mass is determined using the effect of so-called gravitational lensing, where light from the distant objects is distorted by intervening matter. Most of the matter in the clusters (blue) is clearly separate from the normal matter (pink), giving direct evidence that nearly all of the matter in the clusters is dark.

The hot gas in each cluster was slowed by a drag force, similar to air resistance, during the collision. In contrast, the dark matter was not slowed by the impact because it does not interact directly with itself or the gas except through gravity. Therefore, during the collision the dark matter clumps from the two clusters moved ahead of the hot gas, producing the separation of the dark and normal matter seen in the image. If hot gas was the most massive component in the clusters, as proposed by alternative theories of gravity, such an effect would not be seen. Instead, this result shows that dark matter is required.

Broadcaster embarrassed by porn

Cat watching television!Imagine a news broadcast with porn being shown in the background. The eyes must have popped out of the sockets of the scores of adults watching the news at that time. This must be an embarrassment to many parents too. The accidental mishap actually took place at Sweden's state broadcaster SVT. The details as extracted from Northwest Florida Daily News (AP) are as follows.

Viewers of a 5-minute news update at midnight Saturday could see explicit scenes from a Czech porn movie on a TV screen behind news anchor Peter Dahlgren.

The monitor, one of many on the wall of a control room visible behind the studio, normally shows other news channels during broadcasts. But staffers who earlier in the evening had watched a sports event on cable channel Canal Plus, which often shows X-rated films after midnight and had forgotten to switch it back, said news director Per Yng.

A producer quickly spotted the sex scenes and ran into the control room and turned off the monitor, Yng said.

Dolphins not as intelligent as thought

DolphinsScientist says that even though dolphins have large brains, laboratory rats and even goldfish can outwit them. This is because new findings revealed that large brains are a function of their environment rather than intelligence. According to Manger,

"Dolphins have a superabundance of glia and very few neurons... The dolphin's brain is not made for information processing it is designed to counter the thermal challenges of being a mammal in water."

Make a panography

A panographyPhotojojo has an easy to follow tutorial on making a panography. What exactly is a panography? Photojojo has this to say

Panographies are wide-angle pictures composed of several individual photos manually stitched together. When these component photos are assembled, they give the impression one would get standing in one place, looking around and unconsciously putting the pictures together in one's head.

This eliminates the frustration of not being able to capture the entire view/scene in one shot. However, the more shots you capture for a panography, the more time required to stitch them together. Nevertheless, it is well worth the effort.

Technology that produces infinite energy?

Potential uses of Steorn energy technologySteorn claims that it has a new turbine technology that generates more energy than it uses. Imagine never having to recharge your phone and never having to refuel your car. That’s just amazing. Check out the following video for what the people at Steorn has to say about it.

To most, this defies the fundamental underpinnings of physics and as such is probably a public relations hoax. In order to circumvent this common thought, the Irish technology company has issued a challenge to 12 of the world’s best scientists to step forward and disprove of their claim. Once it is proven that their technology works, they will begin licensing it to the world’s energy companies.

Let’s hope that Steorn is able to prove us wrong and solve all our energy woes.

Pluto might be demoted after all

Size comparison of the various planetary bodiesPreviously, I have mentioned about a proposal that will increase the number of planets in the solar system well above the current nine. However, many astronomers criticized the proposal as being vague and setting arbitrary cutoff points. One researcher even pointed out that Earth’s Moon might eventually become a planet when it drifts farther away from Earth.

Here is an interesting note as extracted from Space.com:
Earth's Moon was born in a catastrophic collision more than 4 billion years ago. It started out very close to the planet but has been moving away ever since. It's currently drifting away about 1.5 inches (3.74 centimeters) every year.

Hence, a second proposal was put forth. If this proposal is approved, Pluto will be demoted to a non-planet status.

New documentary series – Fight Science

A documentary series which looks at how martial artists generate the power and speed behind each moveIf you are a fan of martial arts, you will love this new TV series, Fight Science on National Geographic Channel. Here is what National Geographic has to say about it.

For the upcoming television special, Fight Science, researchers used high-tech equipment to put real martial artists to the test. The feature will air on August 20 on the National Geographic Channel.

The action took place inside a specially designed film studio that is part laboratory and part dojo, a school for training in the various arts of self-defense.

Here world champion martial artists from diverse disciplines were pitted against a customized crash-test dummy outfitted with impact sensors.

The sensors—along with infrared, high-speed, and high-definition motion-capture cameras—allowed scientists to measure and map the speed, force, range, and impact of the fighter's techniques.

The result is an unprecedented look at how martial artists generate the power and speed behind each move.

Some interesting notes from the series:
  • Most powerful punch - Boxing
  • Most devastating kicks - Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing.
  • Fastest strike - Kung fu punch
I am sure it will be a very educational and interesting series. Look forward to it.

Pyramid-shaped Watermelons

Square and pyramid shaped watermelonsWe have all heard of square-shaped watermelons before. Now, Toshimichi Boui has successfully created pyramid-shaped watermelons.

According to Pink Tentacle,
Each melon is cultivated inside a hand-made acrylic box from a very young age. The vines grow on a wooden trellis so that the melons can be exposed to full sunlight. This allows them to develop nice, evenly colored rinds.

Boui said that he would like to grow melons shaped like gourds and bottles in one year’s time. However, these melons are not as good as the original in terms of flavor as they are not able to fully mature. So it is better to taste them with your eyes instead!

Daily snapshots

Three snapshots of Ahree Lee taken on three separate daysAs quoted from Atom Films:

On November 1, 2001, artist Ahree Lee began taking daily digital snapshots of her own face; and she has continued this project every day since. In 2004, Lee compiled all of her daily images into a montage with a wistful musical score. In the fast-paced parade of images you're about to see, each second of screen time represents about one week's worth of pictures

Ahree Lee’s patience, persistence and endurance to her enthusiasm are just incredible. A very artistic and cool video is the end result. Check it out on the following links.

Bigger Solar System?

Largest known Kuiper Belt objectsRecent discoveries of Pluto-sized worlds have caused heated debates over the term “planets”. The committee of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has gathered at the General Assembly in Prague to resolve this issue.

A highly controversial definition is currently gaining broad support. If it is adopted, the tally of planets in our solar system will be increased well above the current nine by including Ceres, Charon, 2003 UB313 and potentially many other trans-Neptunian objects (See picture – click on it for a larger view).

The General Assembly will last till 25 August 2006. Do stay tune for the latest updates.

World Map of Happiness

The first world map of happinessThe first ever 'world map of happiness' is produced by Adrian White, a psychologist at University of Leicester. The study involved 178 countries and 80,000 people and is based on the main factors that affect happiness such as health, wealth and access to education. Based on the results, the happiest nation in the world is Denmark. Adrian White said:

“We were surprised to see countries in Asia scoring so low, with China 82nd, Japan 90th and India 125th. These are countries that are thought as having a strong sense of collective identity which other researchers have associated with well-being.

"It is also notable that many of the largest countries in terms of population do quite badly. With China 82nd, India 125th and Russia 167th it is interesting to note that larger populations are not associated with happy countries."

Here is a list of the 10 happiest nations in the world
  • 1 - Denmark
  • 2 - Switzerland
  • 3 - Austria
  • 4 - Iceland
  • 5 - The Bahamas
  • 6 - Finland
  • 7 - Sweden
  • 8 - Bhutan
  • 9 – Brunei
  • 10 – Canada

It is interesting to note that six out of ten in the list were from Europe and out of these six; three were from Scandinavia (northern Europe).

Of the many countries in the list, Europe and Canada are obviously regions of great natural beauty, and that may be one of the reasons why these people are happier. To have an overview of happiness in your region, take a look at the map (click on image for a larger view).

But then again, we are all different individuals, so for each one of us happiness is different. For me, happiness is something to do, something to love and something to hope for. How about you?

Link: University of Leicester
Image: Adrian White, Analytic Social Psychologist, University of Leicester

The study is based on data on happiness published by the New Economics Foundation (Marks, N., Abdallah, S., Simms, A, Thompson, S.(2006). The Happy Planet Index. London: New Economics Foundation). Dr White also sourced data from UNESCO on access to schooling, from the WHO on life expectancy, and from the CIA on GDP per capita. He then performed new analysis with this data to come to a unique and novel set of results; specifically the extent of correlation between measures of poverty, health and education, and the variable of happiness. He also presented the data on happiness in the form of a global projection, the 'World Map of Happiness'.

A levitating bed

A magnetically levitating bed which floats above magnets and is held in place by four very thin tethersJanjaap Ruijssenaars, a Dutch architect, spent six years to develop what seems like something out of the supernatural/fantasy world – a magnetically levitating bed. This “Aladdin's flying carpet” which floats above magnets is capable of carrying up to 900 kilograms and is held in place by four very thin tethers.

The regular model comes at a whopping USD $1.5 million. It also comes at 1/5th the size of the regular model at a more affordable $146,000. At this price, it is still way too expensive for a bed and is certainly more useful for impressing potential overnight guests rather than having a good night’s sleep. However, I do like its innovative design.

Mind-controlled wheelchair

Controlling a wheelchair through thoughtA team of researchers led by Professor Kazuo Tanaka at the University of Electro-Communications have come up with a new type of wheelchair which can be steered by thought. According to Pink Tentacle,

The wheelchair interprets the user’s intended direction by means of a skull cap outfitted with a system of sensors. The sensors read the brain waves, enabling the user to control the wheelchair’s direction simply by thinking “move left” or “move right.” Tests have shown that the wheelchair has an 80% degree of accuracy in interpreting the user’s intentions and moving in the desired direction.

The degree of accuracy is incredible given the complexity of interpreting thoughts. This technology would be of great help to the many unfortunate people in the world who can’t move the wheelchair by themselves.

The application of this technology is endless. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one can interact with all electronic devices simply by thought?

Sexy music triggers teen sex

A huge crowd of people at a concertMuch of popular music aimed at teens contains sexual overtones. However, researchers have found that teens who said they listened to lots of music with degrading sexual messages were almost twice as likely to start having intercourse or other sexual activities within the following two years as were teens who listened to little or no sexually degrading music.

Quoted by a researcher for Rand Corp:
"Exposure to lots of sexually degrading music gives them a specific message about sex," said lead author Steven Martino, a researcher for Rand Corp. in Pittsburgh. "Boys learn they should be relentless in pursuit of women and girls learn to view themselves as sex objects", he said. "We think that really lowers kids' inhibitions and make them less thoughtful about sexual decisions and may influence them to make decisions they regret."

Look Ma, No Interfaces!

Demonstration of a multi-touch interface by Jefferson HanIf you have seen the movie “Minority Report”, you must be awed by the ease in which simple hand gestures are used to interact with a computer in place of keyboard and mouse. So, when will such an interface becomes a reality? It would probably be a surprise to you but the answer is present day. According to Howstuffworks,

Han debuted the uber-cool multi-touch interface at TED 2006 (Technology Entertainment Design), an annual 4-day conference held in Monterrey, California. He demonstrated to a roomful of enthusiastic observers the multi-touch interface’s graphic capabilities and intuitive approach where "the interface disappears." With no more than two fingers, Han navigates through computer programs -- a 3-D mapping program (like Google Earth), resizing and organizing digital photos and typing on a virtual keyboard -- on the pressure-sensitive screen.

Wow, this completely revolutionizes the human-computer interface. Looks like the keyboard and mouse would soon be obsolete. Can’t wait for it to happen! Remember to watch the video of Han’s demonstration from the following link.
