The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST) has developed a thin film for a mirror that allows one to switch between the reflective and transparent states. The prototype as seen in the above picture measures 60 x 70 cm. According to scientists, an estimated 30% energy savings can be achieved due to a reduction in air conditioning needs. This material can also be applied to transparent materials besides glass and more applications may yet be discovered.
