Tycoon throws $650,000 birthday banquet for mum

Entrance to Grand Shanghai RestaurantCan money be used to express the love for your mother? Perhaps not. But that’s exactly what a tycoon tried.

He wanted to tell his mother that she was worth a million dollars and so threw a lavish birthday bash for her last night, which was also Valentine's Day. The bill came to an estimated Singapore $1 million (US $650,000). And there were only 26 guests.

The publicity-shy millionaire, who insisted on total privacy, brought in his own team of service staff to replace those at Grand Shanghai Restaurant in Havelock Road. He had block-booked the restaurant for the occasion. He also hired a band of red-attired security staff to ensure that no outsiders got near.

The tycoon also got the restaurant to add two intricately-carved dragon pillars at its entrance, redecorate the exterior and interior, add a gold carpet to the entire floor, and hang golden banners and Chinese banquet lanterns all over the venue. The dining table for the Lady of Honour was specially custom-made in a heart shape and flown in from China.

He also flew in top foreign chefs to prepare this mother of all banquets to demonstrate his filial love.

The performers who entertained the gathering far out-numbered the guests. They included Shaolin monks, the Twelve Girls Band, acrobats and some 80 other artistes.
