Officials say a veterans' museum in Cumberland has unknowingly had a live rocket on display for two years.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Joseph Zurolo says a local veteran donated the 48-inch Mark 1 Rocket to the museum at the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 on North Liberty Street. Museum officials believed the rocket similar to those used on American helicopter gun ships in Vietnam was no longer active.
But after someone familiar with this type of device inspected it, Allegany County officials were alerted. Technicians later removed the rocket and rendered it safe.
