World's first transistor radio

Radio. With modern day technology, radios are getting smaller in size but increasing in functionality. But can you remember, or rather have you seen the world's first transistor radio (the Regency TR-1, 1954)? Some interesting facts:
Regency TR-1, the world's 1st commercially released transistor radio - went on sale in the fall of 1954. This cabinet colour was called "madarin red". Also came in black, cloud grey and ivory.

  • Sony TR-63, Sony's 1st ever pocket radio - 1956.. This is the earlier version when the company name was Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo. Sony was actually a brand name! About a year after this radio was released the company officially changed it's corporate name to SONY, perhaps you've heard of them?

  • Sony TR-610 Sony's 1st "mass produced" - 1958. This set the standard for transistor radio design. Look closely at some of the other radios in this collection, you'll see lots of imitators of the TR-610 appearance.

Thanks, Julie !
