Silent jet

SAX-40A team of 40 researchers from Cambridge University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have unveiled a radical design for a “silent aircraft”. The proposed plane has a 222-foot (68-meter) wingspan and is 44 metres long from nose to tail, comparable in size to a Boeing 767. The team says that any noise from this concept aircraft, known as the SAX-40 would only be as noisy as a washing machine or other household appliance. Such jets could ease airport noise thus making it more bearable for those living near one. This aircraft which is capable of carrying 215 passengers took the researchers 3 years to design and could be in the air by 2030.

BBC has a nice roundup of some of the design's key features.
