Tycoon drops $160K on white truffle

White truffleThis picture of an edible fungus sure looks like a pile of poop to me. Despite its looks, it is actually worth its weight in gold several times over.

In what may be the highest price ever paid for fungus, a Hong Kong property tycoon and his wife reportedly paid $160,406 for an Italian white truffle. They won the 3.3 pound Alba white truffle Sunday during an international auction, and plan to eat it on Thursday as part of a five-course banquet.

AP describes the delicacy: "White truffles, known for their extravagant price tag and strong, garlic-like scent, grow underground with tree roots. They're eaten uncooked or shaved into pasta, salad, omelets and other dishes."
