Sylvia DeVries didn't let nerves get the best of her as she prepared to jump from an altitude of 12,000 feet onto an open field. After all, it was a plunge she had been contemplating for three months leading up to her 80th birthday on May 22.
"I thought it should be something unusual," she said. "It was the most ultimate thing I could think of."
DeVries, accompanied by her four children and a dozen grandchildren, celebrated Mother's Day on Saturday with a tandem jump at Air Indiana Sky Diving Center in Flora.
Minutes after landing, DeVries, of Kalamazoo, Mich., said she felt "a little rubbery" but was thrilled with herself.
