Oregon man experiences air travel in lawn chair

Deckchair balloonistAn Oregon man who attempted to fly from Bend to Idaho in a lawn chair fell short of his destination.

But Kent Couch did fly for 193 miles -- reaching altitudes of 13,000 feet -- before landing in a farmer's field in Eastern Oregon.

The 47-year-old is the latest American to emulate Larry Walters who rose three miles above Los Angeles in a lawn chair lifted by balloons in 1982.

Couch attached 105 balloons to his chair -- each four feet around. Bundled together, the balloons rise three stories high.

Couch carried a global positioning system device, a two-way radio, a digital camcorder and a cell phone.

Why would Couch try such a flight?

He says when you're laying in the grass on a summer day, you see the clouds and wish you could jump on them. He says this was the closest he could get to jumping on them.
