British mum Mae Christina Astley, 25, has stunned doctors by giving birth to identical triplet girls — at odds of 200 million to one. Healthy Amy, Kim and Zoe each weighed in at just 3.3lb after being delivered four weeks early. All were given armbands with their names on so their parents can tell them apart. And they are so tiny they are being kept in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit while they receive breathing support.
Doctors believe her triple birth resulted from a “very strong” shock in early pregnancy. They say the impact made one fertilised egg divide into three to form identical babies. It is far more common for triplets to consist of identical twins and another sibling.
