Close-Up of a Bat

Close-Up of a BatTo some, the whiskers and teeth may be the stuff of nightmares but this stunning image of a 'smiling' bat has won a leading photography award.

The picture, taken under a powerful microscope, stole the show at the Visions of Science and Technology Photographic Awards because it 'made the judges laugh'.

Dr Adam Hart-Davis, chairman of the judges, said: 'I had never seen a bat's face so close up before so there was a lot of new information – especially the whiskers and the teeth.

Steve Gschmeissner, who took the winning picture of the insect-eating creature, said it was a veterinary specimen of a British bat.
