Environmental activists in Bolivia are doing a good deed twice over - helping the environment and needy families by building homes made of recycled bottles. The first of the 'bottle-houses' was finished recently in an impoverished neighborhood in Warnes, a town in the eastern province of Santa Cruz.
A group of young professionals spent over six months collecting the some 25,000 bottles and raised private donations to complete the project. Volunteers filled the thousands of bottles with sand. The bottles were then connected together and reinforced with cement and steel, creating walls far sturdier than those of the makeshift shacks in the area.
