Are you a fan of Star Trek? How about getting your PhD based on it? That is exactly what Dr Djoymi Baker did. Her 90,000 word dissertation titled ‘Broadcast Space: TV Culture, Myth and Star Trek’ was awarded the University of Melbourne’s Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in the PhD. A total of 624 hours were spent watching over 700 Star Trek episodes in order to investigate the relationship between ancient mythology and today’s popular culture. This thesis is now being converted to academic text.
