World’s tallest structure, Burj Dubai or “New Tokyo Tower”?

New Tokyo TowerKiichi Sumikawa, a Japanese architect, has just unveiled the design for the world tallest freestanding structure on land. This 610-meter (2001 ft) high radio and television transmission tower will be located in Tokyo, Japan, and is set to replace the Tokyo Tower built in 1958, as Tokyo's architectural landmarks. Its estimated cost is around US $430 million.

Its base will be shaped like a triangle and tapers to a spherically shaped top. Viewing platforms will be situated at both 350 meters (1,148 ft) and 450 meters (1,476 ft). The construction of the "New Tokyo Tower" is scheduled to start in 2008 and is expected to be completed in 2011.

New Tokyo TowerSince 1976, the tallest freestanding structure on land has been the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, with a height of 553.3 meters (1,815 ft). The Japanese claims that the “New Tokyo Tower” will take this title upon completion in 2011. However, the Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with its official height yet to be released is also stated to be the tallest in the world. I wonder which will be the world’s tallest structure, the Burj Dubai or the “New Tokyo Tower”?

It will be fun to see this go up over the next five years. There might actually be a reason to go to Sumida ward once this is built!
